Song For Jim, The Rebel, When I Came Down
Manager Jim Simpson set up time for the band to record some demos. First was Song For Jim, a jazz guitar song named after Jim. The song was not liked by the band and shelved. Overseeing the session was Gus Dudgeon who brought attention to the music of Locomotive. Gus set up contact between their keyboardist Norman Haines and Jim Simpson. Which lead to Norman writing the next two songs. The Rebel being the nest one recorded. From interviews the band has said it was too poppy for them. Haines then came in with When I Came Down. A version with and without Haines on Keyboards came to be. SFJ remains unreleased save for a few seconds on the Story Of V.1. And the recording is in Jim Simpson's hands. The Rebel in 2009 came out and is no longer considered 'rare'. WICD we have 50 seconds of it in public. While a select few have it complete. But some have repeated the song in youtube videos and calling that the complete song. These come from a acetate record. The Book 'How Black Was Our Sabbath' is a good place to get the complete details on these tracks. I'd be willing to bet there's more from these sessions. Unless the master reels where lost in time.
